DST has identified the following 5 tips that users can do on their own, or by using DST’s free PC Fixer, to keep their computer in tip-top shape:
1. Disable Startup Programs: when new software programs are installed, vendors unnecessarily preset their applications to automatically start and run in the background when Windows is started and a PC is powered on. By disabling infrequently used programs, users can free up a lot of valuable resources and minimize possible software conflicts.
2. Disable Unnecessary Services: many Windows Services run needlessly in the background. For example, when a program freezes or crashes on a user’s desktop, the Windows Error Reporting (WER) service is automatically launched and error data is sent to Microsoft over the Internet. However, users do not reap a single benefit from this service, which significantly taxes the PC’s memory and CPU usage. By disabling WER and other Window Services (i.e.: Remote Logon, QoS RSVP, etc.), users can boost the performance of their PC considerably.
3. Defragment Hard Drives Regularly: as users create, save and delete files, and install and remove programs, the amount of free space on a PC becomes scattered and fragmented. By defragmenting PCs regularly, users can regain large chunks of free space on their hard drives and speed up the performance of their machine.
4. Clean Out the Registry: the registry stores all changes made to files or programs, settings for hardware and software, user preferences, system policies, control panel settings, etc. Users can speed up their PCs by clearing the Windows Registry of unnecessary entries, file changes, settings, etc.
5. Optimize Windows: another useful measure a user can do is to optimize their Windows and network settings; this could include turning off Windows animations, opting for less graphic-heavy screensavers or desktop backgrounds, disabling the hibernation feature, and optimizing the network type.
